Yongsin (用神) — The Balancing Element
How to find the Yongsin that corrects Five Element imbalances, and how it guides career, environment, and direction.
There's a core concept in saju that explains why certain periods go well
and others just don't, no matter what you do.
用神 (Useful God).
It's the element that keeps your chart in balance.
When the Useful God gets stronger → auspicious (吉).
When the Useful God gets weaker → inauspicious (凶).
Combinations, clashes, and the various spirits — their good or bad effects are all
ultimately determined by their relationship to your Useful God.

Suppression & Support Useful God — Balancing Strength
The most fundamental type of Useful God.
Chart where the Day Master is strong (身强)
→ Needs elements that control or drain it = 食傷, 財星, 官星 become the Useful God
Chart where the Day Master is weak (身弱)
→ Needs elements that generate and support it = 印星, 比劫 become the Useful God
Key criteria:
① Does the Day Master gain power from the month branch season? (得令)
② Do surrounding characters generate the Day Master? (得勢)
③ Does the day branch protect the Day Master? (得地)

Seasonal Useful God — Balancing Temperature
Saju charts have a temperature too.
Summer chart (巳午未 months) → hot and dry
→ Needs 水 and 金 to cool it down
Winter chart (亥子丑 months) → cold and damp
→ Needs 火 and 木 to warm it up
The ideal is when the suppression/support Useful God and the seasonal Useful God match.
When they conflict, follow the stronger one.
This is why a single 丙火 in a brutal winter chart can define someone's entire life.

The Five Gods (五神) System
It's not just about the one Useful God.
We divide it into 5 roles.
用神 (Useful God): The core balancing element. What you need to nurture.
喜神 (Favorable God): The element that supports the Useful God. The second-best thing.
忌神 (Unfavorable God): The element that harms you. What to avoid.
仇神 (Enemy God): The element that strengthens the 忌神. Potentially the worst.
閑神 (Neutral God): The element with little real impact.
忌神 Major Cycle (大運) = a period of hardship. Even worse if 仇神 arrives too.
用神 Major Cycle = golden era. Even stronger when 喜神 comes alongside.

Standalone 1 — Useful God Element and Career
If your Useful God is 火, here's what fits:
Career: IT, marketing, arts, energy sector
Direction: South
Season: More energetic in summer
Colors: Red and orange tones
Even without knowing your chart, you can run this self-check:
If your energy rises in spring and summer but slumps in fall and winter
→ You're likely a 火 or 木 Useful God type.
Standalone 2 — Unfavorable God Major Cycle
A period when the 忌神 element runs the Major Cycle (大運) for 10 years.
No matter how talented or capable you are,
the best strategy during an 忌神 Major Cycle is simply to hold on.
Making big investments or expanding a business during this window
leads to heavy losses.
On the flip side — the people who prepare right before a 用神 Major Cycle
are the ones who benefit most when it arrives.
Timing is strategy.
Standalone 3 — Mediating Useful God
When two elements in your chart are clashing hard:
木 is strong and 土 is strong too → a state of 木克土
The element that stops the fight = 通關用神 (Mediating Useful God)
Place 水 between 木 and 土:
水生木 drains 木's energy → tension eases
An element that acts as mediator between two powerful forces.
This often turns out to be that person's core talent.
