At the moment of birth, the cosmos imprints a unique set of temporal coordinates. Saju is the language that reads them.
Saju (四柱, "four pillars") represents the year, month, day, and hour of birth as four distinct pillars. Each pillar carries two characters — a Heavenly Stem (天干, cheongan) and an Earthly Branch (地支, jiji) — giving eight characters in total, which is why the system is also called Palcha (八字, "eight characters"). Developed over millennia across East Asia, the practice of Myeongrihak (命理學) reads one's innate temperament, talents, and the rhythm of life from these eight characters.
Modern practitioners approach saju not as fate prediction but as a framework for self-understanding — a map of one's energetic constitution. Knowing which elements are strong or weak, and which special stars (신살) are present, sharpens awareness of one's natural strengths and growth edges.
The Four Pillars
Year Pillar (年柱)
Represents the birth year. Reflects ancestral energy, family background, and the early years of life.
Month Pillar (月柱)
Represents the birth month. One of the most influential pillars — governs career aptitude, social environment, and the relationship with parents.
Day Pillar (日柱)
Represents the birth day. The Day Stem becomes one's core elemental identity (Day Master) and the reference point for all interpretations. Reflects the inner self and marriage.
Hour Pillar (時柱)
Represents the birth hour. Reflects children, later life, and the second half of a career. When the exact birth time is unknown, the chart is read from three pillars.
The Five Elements
All stems and branches belong to one of five elemental phases: Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), and Water (水). These phases generate and control each other in cycles, creating the dynamic interplay that gives each chart its unique character.
